AI Washing
The practice of exaggerating or falsely claiming a product's or company's use of artificial intelligence to appear more innovative than it actually is.
Explanation
AI washing describes marketing and investor communications that overstate a company's actual AI capabilities, similar to how greenwashing overstates environmental credentials. US regulators, including the SEC, adopted the term around 2023-2024 after bringing enforcement actions against firms that misrepresented their AI use to investors. Marketers face real exposure here: describing ordinary automation or rules-based software as AI-powered, without substance behind the claim, creates legal and reputational risk.
Usage context / examples
In 2024 the SEC settled its first AI washing charges against investment advisers Delphia and Global Predictions for making false claims about their use of artificial intelligence in client materials.
