Breaking the Rules / Take Risks

A leadership stance that deliberately challenges established norms and accepts calculated risk to create differentiated, breakthrough marketing or business outcomes.

Explanation

This is a leadership posture rather than a formally named framework: it describes leaders who treat existing conventions, whether internal process, category norms, or safe creative choices, as a starting point to challenge rather than a fixed constraint. The logic is that incremental, low-risk decisions tend to produce incremental, low-impact results, so meaningful differentiation often requires leaders to accept the discomfort of being wrong to be genuinely different. The idea matters to marketers because it names the tension every brand leader faces between protecting what is safe and pursuing what is distinctive.

Usage context / examples

Discussed by Alex Craddock of Citi on MMA's Building Better CMOs podcast as a leadership philosophy of challenging conventions and taking risks.
