Cognitive Offloading

A strategy of using a physical action or external tool, instead of pure mental effort, to reduce a task's mental demand.

Explanation

Cognitive offloading describes behaviors such as setting a phone alarm instead of remembering an appointment, writing a note instead of memorizing a fact, or turning your head to view a rotated image more easily. The term is used in cognitive science literature, including research published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences, to describe how people manage limited mental capacity by shifting part of a task onto the environment or a device. Products and interfaces such as reminders, autofill, recommendation engines, and AI assistants succeed partly by giving users a place to offload memory and decision effort, and that shapes how much friction people will tolerate in an app or purchase flow.

Usage context / examples

A shopping app that saves a user's size and past orders so they do not have to re-enter details is exploiting cognitive offloading to reduce checkout friction.
