Consumer Ethnography

A research method that studies consumers by directly observing their real behavior in natural settings rather than relying only on surveys or self-reported answers.

Explanation

Ethnography originates in anthropology, where researchers embed themselves in a community to observe behavior firsthand rather than asking people to describe it after the fact. Applied to marketing, consumer ethnography means watching how people actually shop, use products, or make decisions in their homes, stores, or daily routines, which often reveals gaps between what consumers say they do and what they actually do. It matters for marketers because it surfaces unspoken needs, workarounds, and context that standard surveys and focus groups tend to miss; that gap informs product design and messaging that better fits real behavior.
