Digital Twin Technology

A virtual, continuously updated model of a real physical object, process, or system, used to simulate and predict its behavior.

Explanation

A digital twin is a software replica of something physical, a factory line, a building, a supply chain, or even a city, built from real-time sensor data so that changes in the physical original are reflected in the model, allowing teams to test scenarios or predict maintenance needs without disrupting the real system. It originated in manufacturing and aerospace engineering and has since spread to logistics, healthcare, and urban planning. For marketers in industrial, B2B, and technology sectors, the term gives a concrete way to describe efficiency and predictive-maintenance benefits to technical buyers.

Usage context / examples

A manufacturer building a digital twin of its production line can simulate the effect of a new machine before installing it physically, reducing the cost of trial and error.
