Effective Altruism
A philosophical and social movement that uses evidence and reasoning to determine the most effective ways to help others and allocate resources.
Explanation
Effective altruism emerged in the early 2010s, associated with philosophers William MacAskill and Toby Ord at Oxford and influenced by Peter Singer's writing on global poverty and ethics. It asks donors, volunteers, and organizations to prioritize actions by measurable impact per dollar or hour rather than by emotional appeal alone. Brands running cause campaigns or CSR programs feel this shift already: audiences, especially younger and more skeptical consumers, increasingly expect proof of measurable impact rather than feel-good messaging.
Usage context / examples
Effective altruism principles influenced the founding of GiveWell, a nonprofit that evaluates charities by cost-effectiveness so donors can direct money to the highest-impact causes.
