HITL (Human in the Loop)
Human in the Loop is an operating principle where a trained person reviews or approves higher-risk AI agent actions, such as sends, payments, deletions or published content, before they execute.
Explanation
It is an established machine-learning term that became a mainstream marketing-ops governance pattern through 2025 to 2026 as agentic marketing scaled. As marketing teams deploy AI agents for content, campaigns and even spend decisions, HITL separates safe "read" actions an agent can do freely from "write" actions that need sign-off, and it also works as a trust signal to consumers wary of unlabeled AI content. In marketing it usually means a person reviews and edits AI-generated campaigns, copy or assets before they are published.
Usage context / examples
A content team lets AI draft email variants but requires an editor to approve every version before it is sent.
