Intent (NLP)

In natural language processing, a label that identifies the goal behind a user's message, such as a chatbot request to check an order or ask for a refund.

Explanation

Intent is a core concept in natural language processing and conversational AI: it is the category assigned to a piece of user text or speech that captures what the person is trying to accomplish, separate from the specific words they used. A chatbot or voice assistant is typically trained on a labeled dataset of example phrases mapped to intents (for example 'order_status' or 'refund_request'), and it scores each new message against those known intents to decide how to respond or when to hand off to a human. Modern systems increasingly use large language models to infer intent directly rather than relying only on a fixed, pre-trained classifier. For marketers building or overseeing chatbots and customer service automation, this matters directly: how accurately a system recognizes intent determines whether automated conversations resolve customer needs or frustrate them.

Usage context / examples

A customer service chatbot classifies the message 'where is my package' under the 'order_status' intent so it can automatically pull tracking information instead of routing the customer to a human agent.
