KOL (Key Opinion Leader)

An influencer with recognized authority in a category, such as beauty, tech, or lifestyle, distinguished from a KOC, an everyday user whose reviews read as authentic.

Explanation

KOL terminology originated in medical and scientific fields and is long established in Chinese social commerce platforms such as Xiaohongshu and Douyin. It is now crossing into Western marketing vocabulary as TikTok Shop and cross-border commerce push agencies and brands outside China to adopt the same tiered creator strategy, using KOLs for reach and KOCs for social proof. This is directly relevant to Turkiye and MEA marketers running cross-border TikTok Shop campaigns.

Usage context / examples

Reacherapp and multiple TikTok Shop growth guides explicitly frame "KOL" as the term Western brands scaling on TikTok Shop need to learn, importing it from the China playbook.

Turkish definition

KOL, bir kategoride tanınmış otoriteye sahip bir influencer'dır ve incelemeleri daha samimi görünen sıradan bir kullanıcı olan KOC'tan ayrılır.
