llms.txt
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file, similar in spirit to robots.txt or an XML sitemap, meant to help large language models find and prioritize a site's most important content.
Explanation
Jeremy Howard of fast.ai and Answer.AI proposed the file in September 2024, and SEO trade press, including Search Engine Land and Ahrefs, has discussed it since as a low-effort AI-readiness step. Adoption stays low even so, at about 10 percent of a 300,000-domain sample cited by Ahrefs, and Google's Gary Illyes stated in July 2025 that Google does not support or plan to support it. Large empirical studies cited by these sources found no measurable AI-citation uplift from adding the file as of 2025 to 2026.
