Synthetic Trust

Trust signals (reviews, testimonials, faces, voices) that are artificially generated by AI rather than coming from real people or experiences.

Explanation

Synthetic trust refers to the growing situation where the credibility cues audiences rely on, a friendly spokesperson, a glowing review, a case study photo, can now be produced entirely by AI rather than reflecting a genuine human source. As AI-generated content becomes cheap and widespread, some of it undisclosed, consumers increasingly cannot tell whether a signal of authenticity is real, which puts pressure on the trust that brand communication depends on. Marketing commentators argue the answer is transparency and real, identifiable human voices, since disclosed AI use tends to be received better than content that turns out to be AI-generated without disclosure. That raises the reputational cost for marketers of being caught using undisclosed synthetic content in reviews, testimonials, or influencer-style posts.

Usage context / examples

A skincare brand that publishes AI-generated 'customer' testimonial videos without disclosure risks a synthetic-trust backlash if audiences discover the people in the videos do not exist.
