Automation Boundary
The practical line, in a given task or purchase journey, between what a brand lets AI agents handle on their own and what it keeps in human hands.
Explanation
Former OpenAI Head of Go-to-Market Zack Kass uses the automation boundary to describe where AI agents take over navigation and decisions in a customer journey, and where a brand still needs direct human attention. He frames the boundary as moving over time, set by risk, value and what customers find acceptable rather than by what technology can technically do. Kass has presented the idea in talks tied to his book The Next Renaissance, including an August 2026 appearance on MMA's Decoding AI for Marketing podcast.
Usage context / examples
In the August 25, 2026 episode of MMA's Decoding AI for Marketing podcast, recorded live at MMA's CMO & CEO Summit, Zack Kass discussed how marketers can locate their brand's place relative to customers' automation boundary as AI becomes infrastructure for more of the purchase journey.
