Doomscrolling
The habit of continuously scrolling through distressing or negative news and social media content, even when it causes anxiety.
Explanation
Doomscrolling describes compulsively consuming a stream of alarming or negative information, usually through a smartphone, well past the point where it stops being informative and starts causing emotional harm. Usage of the term surged during the COVID-19 pandemic and periods of major news events, when 24-hour news cycles and algorithm-driven feeds made it easy to stay locked into distressing content. For marketers and platforms, it raises questions about content design, notification strategy, and audience wellbeing, and it has pushed some brands and apps toward messaging around digital breaks and healthier feed habits.
