FOMA (Fear Of Missing AI)

The anxiety that individuals or organizations feel about falling behind if they do not quickly adopt artificial intelligence tools.

Explanation

FOMA is a recent coinage that plays on the older FOMO (fear of missing out), applied specifically to pressure around AI adoption. It surfaced in marketing and workplace commentary as generative AI tools spread rapidly after 2023, and has since been studied by academics examining workplace anxiety about AI skill gaps and job security, sometimes labeled AI FOMO in that research. FOMA matters to marketers in two ways: it explains why clients and leadership push for AI-labeled products even without a clear use case, and it is itself a psychological trigger that some AI vendors intentionally use in their own marketing.

Usage context / examples

Recent workplace research on AI FOMO identifies distinct anxiety dimensions, including fear of skill obsolescence and fear of being excluded from AI-driven decisions, that echo the FOMA framing used in marketing commentary.
