Hallucinate (AI)

When an AI system, especially a language model, confidently generates false or fabricated information that is not grounded in its training data or reality.

Explanation

In its AI sense, to hallucinate means a system like a chatbot produces plausible-sounding but incorrect or invented content, such as fake citations, wrong facts, or nonexistent events, stated with the same confidence as accurate output. Cambridge Dictionary named "hallucinate" its Word of the Year for 2023 specifically because of this new AI-related meaning; the choice showed how central the issue had become as generative AI tools spread. For marketers using AI for copy, research, or customer-facing chat, unchecked hallucinations can put false claims or made-up statistics into published content. Outputs need fact-checking before use, or the result is legal and reputational risk.

Usage context / examples

Cambridge Dictionary's selection of "hallucinate" as its 2023 Word of the Year, tied directly to tools like ChatGPT producing confident but false statements, is the clearest documented example of this usage entering mainstream reference.
