Metamodernism
A cultural sensibility positioned between modernism's sincerity and postmodernism's irony, now applied in marketing to describe brand tones that mix earnestness with self-aware humor.
Explanation
Cultural theorists Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker introduced metamodernism in their 2010 essay "Notes on Metamodernism," describing a cultural mood that oscillates between modernist hope and postmodern irony rather than settling into either. In marketing commentary, the term has been adapted to describe campaigns that combine optimism, honesty, and humor, appealing especially to Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences who are wary of both naive positivity and cynical detachment. For marketers, it offers language for a tone that has become common in youth-focused advertising: sincere but self-aware, hopeful but not saccharine.
