ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol)
An open standard that lets an AI agent complete a purchase on a buyer's behalf while the merchant stays the system of record for payment and tax.
Current status
As of September 2026: launched by OpenAI and Stripe in September 2025. OpenAI retired Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in March 2026 and moved checkout back to merchants' own sites; the protocol itself remains in active development.
Explanation
ACP is an open standard that OpenAI and Stripe co-developed, with Meta and Salesforce also involved, and released under Apache 2.0 on September 29, 2025. It defines how an AI agent can complete a purchase for a buyer while the merchant remains responsible for payments, tax, and compliance. It powered ChatGPT's Instant Checkout with Etsy and Shopify brands including Glossier, Vuori, Spanx, and SKIMS, making it the first widely adopted standard for buying directly inside a chatbot. OpenAI retired the consumer-facing Instant Checkout feature in March 2026, but the industry still references the underlying ACP standard as the checkout-layer protocol.
Usage context / examples
