Frankenstack

A marketing or advertising technology stack assembled from many separately bought tools that were bolted together over time and do not work as one system.

Why this week

On 8 September 2026, MMA's Decoding AI for Marketing podcast asked whether AI can fix advertising's Frankenstack. Guest Mike Lane, CEO of Fluency, argued that stitching new AI tools onto fragmented platforms can create one instead.

Explanation

A Frankenstack is what a marketing team ends up with when each department buys its own tools for data, media buying, creative and reporting, and the pieces are later wired together with manual work, exports and custom connectors. The word blends Frankenstein and tech stack: a system built from mismatched parts that runs, but badly. It comes from the martech world. The earliest verifiable use found is a 31 March 2015 chiefmartec.com post by its editor Scott Brinker, who wrote that the phrase had entered the industry's lingo; six weeks later, in a CIO.com interview, he called it a 'humorous label' for stacks that grew out of marketing silos. No single coiner is known. In 2025 and 2026 the term returned in adtech coverage as teams started adding AI tools and agents on top of these stacks. Before a team adds another AI tool, it pays to check whether the tool connects the existing data and workflows or just adds one more part to the stack.

Usage context / examples

In the 8 September 2026 episode of MMA's Decoding AI for Marketing podcast, hosted by Greg Stuart and Rex Briggs, Fluency CEO Mike Lane described advertising execution as still largely manual. The episode notes say that when fragmented platforms are stitched together with new AI tools, they can create what Lane calls a 'Frankenstack' of software, and that he argues for integrated operating systems that connect data, media and AI agents. At Advertising Week 2025, adtech company Infillion framed the trend as 'the end of the Frankenstack' and a move to composable ad tech (Infillion blog, 9 October 2025).

MMA connection

The term was the subject of an episode of MMA's own Decoding AI for Marketing podcast, hosted by MMA CEO Greg Stuart and Rex Briggs. The topic sits in the territory of MMA's AI Leadership Think Tank (ALTT), whose working groups include Audience Dev & Media Buying, and of the AI/Org Transformation priority on MMA's 2026 agenda, which covers operating models for AI. MMA's State of Agentic AI in Marketing (2026) report is the related reading for teams planning to add AI agents to an existing stack.

Turkish definition

Frankenstack, zamanla ayrı ayrı alınıp birbirine eklenen ve tek bir sistem gibi çalışmayan araçlardan oluşan pazarlama ya da reklam teknolojisi altyapısıdır.
