MCP (Model Context Protocol)
An open standard that lets AI models and agents connect to external tools, data sources, and platforms through one consistent interface.
Current status
As of September 2026: introduced by Anthropic in November 2024; donated in December 2025 to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, which now governs it as a vendor-neutral open standard.
Explanation
MCP is an open standard Anthropic released in November 2024 so AI models and agents can plug into external tools and data sources without a custom integration for each one. Martech vendors covering analytics, CDPs, and ad platforms have moved quickly to add MCP support, since it is what lets a marketer query campaign data or trigger a workflow directly from a conversational AI tool. Trade coverage from Digiday and MarTech tracked marketing-specific adoption through 2025. It is becoming foundational plumbing for agentic marketing workflows across the stack.
Usage context / examples
Supermetrics, Knak, and AdSkate have published MCP integrations that let marketers pull reporting or run creative tests via conversational AI tools.
