TAP (Trusted Agent Protocol)

Trusted Agent Protocol is an open specification, co-developed by Visa and Cloudflare, that attaches cryptographically signed identity headers to AI agent web requests so a merchant can verify the request comes from a known, accountable shopping agent rather than an anonymous bot.

Current status

As of October 2026: launched by Visa with Cloudflare in October 2025 with roughly a dozen launch partners, including Shopify, Stripe, Microsoft and Coinbase; by early 2026 Visa's broader agentic-commerce ecosystem, which TAP is part of, had grown past 100 partners, with Fiserv and Akamai among newer additions.

Explanation

Visa and Cloudflare launched TAP on October 14, 2025, with 12 launch partners including Shopify, Stripe, Microsoft and Coinbase, and by early 2026 the protocol had more than 100 partners with a commercial launch targeted for Q1 2026. Marketers and e-commerce teams need to stop blocking legitimate AI shopping agents as bot traffic while still filtering out scrapers and fraud, and TAP is becoming the plumbing that lets agent-driven traffic reach checkout without being firewalled.
